Frequently Asked Questions

PRINTS:

What is a giclee print?

In its most basic definition, giclée is a French term for “to spray”. It references the process that an inkjet printer uses to reproduce fine art or photography to create individual museum quality, archival copies of the original piece. It is important to note that not all inkjet prints are giclée prints. With giclée printing, you can expect a higher quality product that lasts longer than your run-of-the-mill inkjet prints and there are certain criteria that must be met for a print to be considered a giclée.

In short, for a print to be considered giclée it must be printed on archival papers with archival inks and if it is a reproduction it has to be printed with a minimum 300dpi resolution.

What kind of paper do you use?

All artwork is printed on textured, bright white, archival  matte paper. 300 gsm paper. This is a heavy, thick and textured paper that reflects the colors in the most accurate and bright way possible, and preserves quality for decades with proper care.

What kind of printer/ink do you use?

All artwork is printed with Epson SureColor P900 and it’s original inks. This produces giclée prints that preserves its colors for 200 years if cared properly.

How do I protect my art work?

How you handle your artwork is just as important as the inks and paper used in it. So Ece prints are printed on acid free paper with archival quality inks. However as the owner of the artwork you should pay attention to the below points:

  • FRAME: Frame it right. This means no plastic frames. Go with non-reflective glass or UV protective plexiglass. Make sure your framer uses acid free, archival material in backings and mats. Acids from the framing materials can cause colors to bleach out and cause discolorations of the paper.
  • LIGHT: Keep away from direct sunlight. Ultraviolet light is one of the biggest reasons that art fades. Exposing your prints to direct sunlight and even strong artificial light from bulbs can cause color fading. Light damage is cumulative and irreversible and can even damage the structure of the paper itself.
  • TEMPERATURE: Avoid extreme temperatures. Extreme temperature fluctuations can cause expansion and contraction of the paper fibers and make the print surface uneven. Temperature increases can also increase the rate of deterioration, leading to brittleness and darkening of the paper.
  • HUMIDITY: High humidity can cause mildew, molding and foxing (brown spots), as well attract pests like silverfish and other insects. On the other hand, too low of humidity will dry out the paper and make it brittle. Extreme fluctuations can also cause the print to buckle.
  • POLLUTION: Pollutants to look out for include atmospheric pollutants like sulphur and other airborne particulates, dust, dirt, sweat and oils from your hands.  Atmospheric pollutants as well as biological agents like insects and mold will only flourish as a result of uncontrolled environmental factors such as high humidity and temperature.
  • HANDLING: Do not touch the print with dirty hands. Ideally use gloves. Oils or dirt from your hands can transfer on the paper easily. Do not bend or fold the print.

SIZING:

Prints have blank space on edges ranging .12 to .80 inches for easy framing and matting. Sizes are in inches.

FRAMING:

The best way is to take your print to a framer after you receive it. I prefer using larger frames with a natural white mat and with a mat opening half inch smaller than the size of the print but it is completely up to you. You can display your artwork whichever way you like and be creative about it.
